The Spirited Leader’s Compass
For the leaders who are trying to make sense of their responsibilities, with the drive to achieve something higher and greater than themselves.
An appeal to the part of ourself that burns to do things that matter. For those who are called to leave a legacy of courage; not as a monument to their own ego, but as proof of what our higher selves can achieve. For the few who still believe leadership is a moral act, and who are ready to lead like it.
Leadership is not a position. It’s a responsibility.
It’s not just about results, but the right kind of results.
It’s not about being in charge, but being in service.
Foresight
Purpose, Vision, Mission, Focus
Did I articulate a vision worth building?
One that reaches further than the bottom line, and outlasts me?Did I translate that vision into action?
Or did I traffic in fantasy and avoid doing the real work?Did we stay on mission, or drift into comfort, vanity, or distraction?
Did I protect the long-term in the face of short-term pressures?
Or did I mortgage the future for an easy win today?
Without foresight, there is no leadership, only inertia.
Wisdom
Judgment, Learning, Clarity
Did I see through the fog and make sense of complexity?
Or react to noise and mistake motion for meaning?Did I think clearly, decide wisely, and reflect often?
Or rush in, double down, and defend myself and old ideas?Did I remain curious, open, and teachable?
Or did I lead from ego and certainty?Did I invest in learning for myself and others?
Or encourage a culture of thoughtless busyness?
Wise leadership is slow to speak, quick to learn, and grounded in reality, not fantasy.
Justice
Ethics, Fairness, Legacy, Stewardship
Did I act in ways I’d be proud to be seen, known, and remembered for?
Would I be ashamed if others know how and why I used my privileges?Did I treat others fairly, especially when I had more power?
Did I use my authority to lift, protect, and distribute it? Or did I hoard power for myself?Did I challenge broken systems, unfairness and abuses of power?
Or stay silent, complicit, or comfortable?Did I provide a fair exchange to clients, customers, and colleagues?
Or was my mind on what was in it for me, alone?Did I leave stronger people, systems, values, and structures behind me?
Or build dependence and instability?Did I consider my impact on the world beyond the organisation: on society, on the planet, on future generations?
Justice begins with truth, grows with courage, and endures through legacy.
Courage
Integrity, Accountability, Moral Strength
Did I speak hard truths, even to those with power?
Appeasement should not be confused with diplomacy.Did I face what was uncomfortable, but necessary?
The unrealised capability, the conflict, the misalignment: did I confront it or avoid it?Did I own my failures?
Or spin them as victories, and blame those who I let down?Did I defend my values when they were under pressure?
Or fold when it became too inconvenient?Did I protect what matters, even when it cost me?
Or did I sell my spirit for comfort?
Courage is not the absence of fear, it’s doing the right thing anyway.
Discipline
Focus, Follow-Through, Self-Mastery
Did I lead myself before leading others?
Did I manage my energy, attention, and emotions with integrity?Did I stay focused on what mattered most?
Or get distracted by noise, novelty, or ego?Did I follow through, consistently?
A leader’s word is a promise.Did I resist the temptation to coast, avoid, or procrastinate?
Avoidance compounds into growing debt.Did I model the standards I expect from others?
You can’t demand what you don’t display.
Without self-discipline, leadership becomes theatre. With it, leadership becomes transformation.
Service
Colleagues, Clients, Leading Up & Down
Did I leave each person better than I found them?
If not, why not?Did I lead across my organisation with equal integrity?
Or did I wear different masks on different floors?Did I want to be respected, or obeyed?
Did I seek support, or servitude?Did I compete with people, or grow them?
Did I give them spotlight, or take it from them?Did I honour the people who placed their trust in me?
Did my actions prove me worthy of it?
Leadership is a responsibility you carry for others, not a crown you wear for yourself.
Spiritedness
Duty, Honour, Moral Ambition
Was I animated by something greater than myself?
A hunger for excellence, justice, and legacy: not just my status and safety?Did I cultivate honour, not just image?
Did I act with depth, or perform for approval?Did I measure success in moral terms, not just material ones?
What you gain is worth nothing if it costs who you are.Would my better self be proud of how I led?
Would they feel honoured? Disappointed? Or ashamed?
Thumos (Ancient Greek for ‘spiritedness’) is the part of the soul that longs to be worthy of greatness. Rise to it.
Final Reflection
No one leads perfectly. You will fall short.
But to step into leadership without a burning desire to do it right, to serve, to grow, to transform, is not imperfection. It’s neglect. It brings others down with you.
Look back with clear eyes. Where you failed, make it right. Where you drifted, return. Where you showed strength, build on it.
You don’t learn at the summit. You learn in the climb.Make your best self proud.
That’s who you answer to.
That’s the leader you’re becoming.
